Self-maintaining directory
When a resource's official link stays broken across repeated checks over more than a week, we automatically retire it (hide it from the public directory) so visitors never land on a dead link. Nothing is ever deleted. The moment the link recovers, the resource is automatically restored.

Methodology
What "verified" means. A resource is verified when our team or our automated checker has cross-checked the listing against its authoritative source (typically a .gov, .mil, or established nonprofit domain) and confirmed the name, contact details, and program description appear current. Verification is recorded with a timestamp and a review interval; the projection in resource_verification_state derives the public status from the latest active verification record.
Cadence we commit to. We aim to recheck every published resource at least once every 12 months, with priority resources (crisis lines, housing programs, claims help) on a 90-day cadence. Stale resources are flagged and prioritized in the admin queue automatically.
How link health is measured. A scheduled job walks every published resource URL on a rolling basis, follows redirects, and records the final status code and URL in link_health_checks. A resource is marked "broken" when its most recent check returns a non-success status or fails to connect.
What "blocked by site" means. Some sites — especially government portals behind firewalls — refuse requests from automated checkers with responses like 401, 403, or 429, even though the page loads normally for a person in a browser. We record those as "blocked" rather than broken or unchecked: the link was checked, the site simply would not answer a bot. Blocked links are never auto-retired, and we continue to re-check them on the normal schedule.
How auto-retire works. A resource is auto-retired only after its official link fails several consecutive checks spanning more than a week, never on a single failure. Retiring hides the listing (sets it unpublished) and records the reason and timestamp; it never deletes the record. If a later check finds the link healthy again, the resource is auto-restored, provided it still passes our publish requirements.
Editorial independence. These metrics measure verification and link health only. Vet Uplift offers optional paid services and may be compensated by partners and sponsors, but compensation never affects whether or how a resource is verified, and paid or sponsored content is always clearly labeled where it appears. Nothing in this report can be bought.
Spot-checking us. Every public resource detail page shows the same "Last verified" date that feeds these aggregates, so anything claimed here can be independently confirmed.
