VA Benefits: Everything You Need to Know

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a comprehensive array of benefits to those who have served in the U.S. military. From disability compensation and pension to education, healthcare, and burial benefits, understanding what you've earned is the first step to claiming it. This guide covers every major VA benefit, how to apply, and where to get free help with your claims.

Disability Compensation

VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment for veterans with injuries or diseases that were caused or made worse by military service. Ratings range from 0% to 100% in 10% increments, with 2026 monthly payments ranging from $171.23 (10%) to $3,737.85 (100%). Veterans with dependents receive additional compensation. Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) provides higher rates for specific disabilities.

VA Pension

Wartime veterans aged 65+ or permanently and totally disabled with limited income may qualify for VA pension. The Aid and Attendance benefit provides additional monthly payments for veterans who need help with daily activities. Housebound benefits are available for those substantially confined to their home.

Survivors' Benefits

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) provides monthly payments to surviving spouses and children of veterans who died from service-connected conditions. Survivors' Pension is available to low-income surviving spouses and children of wartime veterans. Burial benefits include burial allowances, headstones, and national cemetery burial.

State-Specific Benefits

Most states offer additional benefits to veterans beyond federal programs. Common state benefits include income tax exemptions on military retirement pay, property tax reductions for disabled veterans, vehicle registration fee waivers, hunting and fishing license discounts, and state veteran homes. Benefits vary significantly by state. Select yours below to see what's available.

Filing a Claim

Veterans can file claims online at VA.gov, by phone at 1-800-827-1000, or in person at their local VA Regional Office. Working with an accredited Veterans Service Organization (VSO) like the American Legion, VFW, DAV, or state Department of Veterans Affairs is strongly recommended. Their assistance is free and significantly improves claim outcomes.

Appeals

If you disagree with a VA decision, you have three appeal options: Supplemental Claim (submit new evidence), Higher Level Review (different reviewer, same evidence), or Board of Veterans' Appeals. Each pathway has different timelines and strategies. Free representation for appeals is available through VSOs and accredited attorneys.
