Eligibility
The Idaho Legislature has granted preference to veterans and certain family members when applying for positions with the state, county, city and other local public employers such as taxing districts for sewers, roads, schools and cemeteries.

- Check the Idaho public job application and claim Veterans’ Preference if you are eligible.
- If you have claimed preference before with that public employer, answer that question on the application if asked.
- Provide any supporting documentation the public employer requires with your application.
- If the form or job posting does not allow for Veterans’ Preference, ask the public employer how to identify your eligibility and what documentation to submit with the application.
- Document your questions and notice to the employer that you are claiming preference.
- If military service or service-connected hospitalization made you miss the deadline, file a late application if the position is still eligible for late filing.

What to expect
The employer must give notice of the appeal process at the conclusion of selection if you claimed Idaho Veterans’ Preference and were not selected. You have 35 days to request a written appeal with the employer, and if the employer does not initiate an appeal within 35 days of your request, you may appeal directly to Idaho district court within 180 days after that deadline.
