Veteran Education Benefits
Education benefits are among the most valuable rewards of military service, opening doors to college degrees, vocational training, certifications, and career advancement. From the Post-9/11 GI Bill to state tuition waivers and veteran-friendly campus programs, the options are extensive. This guide covers every major education benefit available to veterans, how to use them, and how to find veteran-friendly schools.
Federal Education Benefits
Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33)
The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits including full tuition and fees at public institutions (or up to $27,120.05 per year at private institutions in 2026), a monthly housing allowance based on the school's ZIP code, and a $1,000 annual book stipend. Veterans with at least 90 days of aggregate active-duty service after September 10, 2001 are eligible. Benefits can be transferred to dependents under certain conditions.
Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)
The Montgomery GI Bill provides up to 36 months of education benefits for veterans who contributed $100/month for 12 months during active duty. The 2026 full-time monthly rate is approximately $2,054. This benefit covers degree programs, certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeships, and correspondence courses.
Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E / Chapter 31)
VR&E provides comprehensive education and training services for veterans with service-connected disabilities who face employment barriers. Benefits include tuition, books, supplies, subsistence allowance, and supportive services. VR&E can also fund graduate programs, on-the-job training, and self-employment plans.
Survivors' & Dependents' Educational Assistance (Chapter 35)
Dependents and survivors of veterans who died or are permanently and totally disabled due to service-connected conditions may receive up to 36 months of education benefits.
State Education Benefits
Many states offer additional education benefits beyond federal programs. Common state benefits include in-state tuition regardless of residency, state tuition waivers for disabled veterans and their dependents, state-funded scholarships, and fee waivers. Select your state below for specific programs.
Veteran-Friendly Schools
When choosing a school, look for institutions with dedicated Veterans Services offices, student veteran organizations, academic and career counseling for veterans, and flexible credit-transfer policies for military training. The VA's GI Bill Comparison Tool at va.gov helps compare schools by graduation rates, veteran satisfaction, and complaint history.
Apprenticeships & On-the-Job Training
The GI Bill covers approved apprenticeships and on-the-job training programs. Veterans receive a monthly housing allowance while learning a trade. Programs are available in construction, manufacturing, healthcare, IT, and many other fields. Check apprenticeship.gov for listings in your state.
