The California College Fee Waiver (often called the California GI Bill) waives mandatory tuition and fees at all UC, CSU, and California Community College campuses for eligible dependents of disabled or deceased veterans. This is one of the most valuable state education benefits in the country.
Eligibility: Children, spouses, and registered domestic partners of veterans who are service-connected disabled, died of service-connected causes, or had a disability at time of death. The dependent must be a California resident. The veteran does not need to be a California resident.
How to apply: Apply through the California Student Aid Commission at csac.ca.gov or through your campus financial aid office. You'll need the veteran's VA disability rating or death certificate and proof of relationship.
The Post-9/11 GI Bill covers 100% of in-state tuition and fees at California public universities, plus a monthly housing allowance based on the school's ZIP code and a book stipend.
